In ionic compounds, the constituent particles are the ions. As a result, these are held together by the strong ionic bonds and the principal forces are the electrostatic forces that hold the ions together in a crystal lattice. Breaking the crystal lattice means pulling the negative and the positive ions apart, which requires a lot of energy as the electrostatic forces are very strong. Hence the melting point of ionic compounds are very high.

Answer:

For formation of ionic compound, the charges on cation and anion must be balanced. The cation is formed by loss of electrons by metals and anions are formed by gain of electrons by non metals.

Example: NaCl is formed by cation Na^+ and anion .

They have high melting point beacuse:

1) They are hard

2) They have  strong electrostatic attractions.

3) They have regular arrangement of ions and thus fit perfectly into the crystalline lattice.
