NaOH ionization decreases in the presence of acetic acid

  • NaOH in the presence of CH₃COOH (AcOH) will react to form CH₃COONa as follows:

              NaOH(aq) + CH₃COONa(aq) ⇒ CH₃COONa(aq) + H₂O(l)

  • The compound CH₃COONa will further dissociate to give CH₃COO⁻ ions and Na⁺ ions.
  • NaOH also dissociates to give Na ions and H ions when present in aqueous conditions.
  • This will result in an increase in Na ion concentration, and due to the common ion effect, the dissociation of NaOH will be suppressed.

Thus, ionization of NaOH is decreased in the presence of (Option a) AcOH
