Zeff = Nuclear Charge - Shielding

Na= 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1

Mg= 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2

Zeff of Mg is greater than Na because Nuclear Charge is greater than electrons Shielding effect which decreases the size of atom and hence make it difficult to withdraw an electron due to which IE increases.
