beacouse nitrogen has by losing one electron from 2p orbital it will gain half filled orbit stability whereas in oxygen 2 electrons are needed to gain/loose for stability from 2s orbit

The ionization potential of N7 is greater than O8 because of the extra stability of the half-filled p orbitals of nitrogen

  • Ionization potential is the minimum energy required to remove the most loosely bound electron of an atom in its gaseous state.
  • The electronic configuration of nitrogen is  1s² 2s² 2p³
  • The electronic configuration of Oxygen is 1s² 2s² 2p⁴
  • The half-filled p orbitals of nitrogen are extra stable due to maximum exchange energy and symmetry.
  • So it is very difficult for the electrons from the p orbital of nitrogen to be removed when compared to oxygen.
  • This is the reason for the high ionization energy of Nitrogen compared to oxygen.
