for eg na+.cl- and and mg2+.cl2-as na has electronic configuration 2,8,1 thus it can only donate one electron to complete it's octate and doesn't have 2e and cannot become na2+and in mg e.c is2,8,2 thus can only donate2 electons and doesn't have 3 e and cannot become 3+

the ions Na+ and Mg2+ can loose 1 or 2 electrons respectively to attain noble gas configuration thus it cannot loose 2 and 3 electrons and become 2+ and 3+ respectively.
