Given:

(i) One person has Rs 100 with him.

(ii) Plates cost Rs 5 each

(iii) Glass costs Rs 3 each

(iv) 40 spoons cost Rs 1.

To find:

(i) Number of items he can buy by spending Rs 100 fully.

Solution:

First of all let us buy 40 spoons for Rs 1.

Money remaining = Rs (100-1) = Rs 99

As 99 is not perfectly divided by 5, the entire money will not get exhausted by buying the plates only.

So,  number of plates = Total money/Price of 1 plate

= 99/5

= 19.8

≈ 19 plates           [Number of items cant be fractional]

19 plates costs Rs (19*5) = Rs 95

Money left = Rs (100-95-1)

= Rs 4

From Rs 4, we can get 1 glass, which costs Rs 3.

Now, money remaining = Rs (4-3)

= Rs 1

From Rs 1, we can buy another 40 spoons.

Thus entire Rs 100 is exhausted and we have bought:

1) 19 plates

2) 1 glass

3) 80 spoons.
