Under Iqta System, the land of the empire was divided into several large/big and small/little tracts called Iqta and assigned these Iqtas to his soldiers, officers and nobles.

during the sultanate period, the nobles were given land grants. these lands were called iqta. the nobles who received it were called iqtadars. they collected taxes from the farmers living in their iqta. with this money, they maintained themselves, their family and also paid the soldiers who worked under them. in return, they supplied troops to the sultan whenever he needed them.

the slave and khalji dynasty gave iqta only to some high military commanders. the iqtadars, thus were very few in number. under the tughluqs, however, iqtas were given more leniently. so there were a large number of iqtadars. the sultans tried to check that the iqtadars did not overtax the farmers and that they maintained a limited troop.
