As they entered into that grey building, Irene reminded her mother of her promise

Explanation:

  • Her mother promised her that they will never come back to that place again
  • However, the situation was worse and her mother wanted to take her to a place where she could be safe

Irene gripped her mom’s hand harder as they walked through the doors of the imposing grey building.

Her mom had promised her they’d never have to come here again, but here they were walking through the streets of what remains of human life here.

It's been two years since that horrifying disaster occurred. So destructive that even the most courageous ones were left with a deep fear of end in their hearts.

The government had later published a report trying to explain the reason behind.

"The increasing human exploitation of resources did this to us. We are the only one responsible here" its last line read.

It killed almost three fourth of the population and the remaining ones were transported to another place continent for a new beginning.

But who knew that in their to a new start there stands another backhole threatening to swallow up their light of hope.

The place they were shifting to face a somewhat same near death experience and so their journey was put on reverse way back home.

Irene's mother her were the only one left in their joint family. And whenever she asked about her grandfather her mother would say they were now living between stars.

For a five year old she was smart but this time she was confused about all that was happening around her.

Her mother had told her not to leave her for a second.

They were currently staying in a building two streets across this one.

This used to be her old home. Her mother had come to collect useful things though it was not as ruined as the buildings around it still has those nasty cracks that gave Irene the Goosebumps she had when he had seen the liberty statue falling down with tonnes of concrete it had creating a dark grey cloud of dust around.

The sky was pretty much of same colour now.

Irene's mother could've left her at home knowing the fears of her daughter but she would dare not risk her security.

Despite of the conditions she loved her daughter above all.

As they got the things needed in a back they were on their way back home.

The roads had uneven surfaces with cracks in them so cars were not an option.

Irene looked around as they walked back. The park in her area was covered in all kind of dirt and concrete. Irene's mother wished no one had seen her.

The more she stared it the tighter she held her mother's hand.

She could see a hand just below the top block of the concreate with poking rods in all directions.

Noticing the tightened her mother took her in the arms and continued on her way back.

When they reached their home. Irene's mother, Helen unlocked the door and closed it behind her.

The clock beside table read 6 PM in its red lines.

Helen went to check for the locks of other doors and windows in the house and once she was satisfied she came back to Irene.

"You hungry?" She asked her.

Irene shook her head no.

"Are you alright kiddo?" Irene shook her head no once again and then hugged her.

"Mommy will they come again tonight?" Helen heard her daughter's soft innocent voice asking her.

She knew what she was asking. But she didn't knew herself.

She knew that there was another darker side. Something she didn't wanted her daughter to know about something she wished she hadn't known herself.

Those creatures of dark were determined to ending what was left of remaining humans.

Helen had a doubt there was something wrong with a part of population they were acting strange but when she saw one walking after falling of the second floor in their neighbour that night she knew there was something wrong. Very wrong.

She knew she can’t escape it long so she just held her daughter tight and prayed to cherish these last moments of her with Irene. Who know if it was their last night of human life?

The dark night they wanted to escape for last four days came again. Helen had blown out any other light source inside.

The voices of undead was to be heard again. Irene held her mother tight. They were in the basement the iron door was locked with a cupboard against it. They were living in here for last three days and this was the only safe place Helen could think of without any sound and light source inside no darl creature can find her there.

But did she knew that someone had seen her walking to her house back?

Or maybe the loud and hurried knocks on the basement door and the strange voices of humming were enough to tell her that.
