On going back to one of the Shiplake islands, George suggested that with the vegetables and the remains of cold beef they could make an Irish stew.

George gathered woods and made a fire while the narrator and Harris started to peel potatoes. The narrator felt that peeling potatoes was a very difficult task. The more they peeled, the more peel there seemed to be left on. By the time they had got all the peel off there was no potato left. George suggested to scrap the potatoes. So the narrator and Harris started to scrap the potatoes but they could do only four. George wasn't satisfied with it. So they put half-dozen potatoes without peeling. They even put cabbage and about half a peck of peas. They overhauled both the hampers and added all remnants like half a pork pie, cold boiled bacon, potted salmon, cracked eggs.

At last even Montmorency wanted to contribute a dead water rat. But George rejected the idea of water rats in Irish stew. The Irish stew was a great success. According to the narrator, it was a dish with new flavor and nourishing too .The three friends finished the Irish stew with tea and cherry tart.
