iron ball is heavy and the density of water is low so, iron ball sinks in water.
mercury has high density so , iron ball floats on it.

density IRON NAIL is more than that of water. the IRON nail cannot displace the WATER equal to its own weight and SINKS BUT the density of mercury is more than that of IRON nail . hence it gives more upthurst which help the IRON to FLOAT IN MERCURY.
