iron does not burn on heating but iron fillings burn. Explain.​

Hence when heated it doesn't reach to its ignition temperature and doesn't burn. But iron fillings when sprinkled in flames attain the ignition temperature ( as iron fillings are comparatively smaller particles) and gain larger surface area for the reaction. Therefore they burn vigorously.

Explanation:

when the iron is heated directly it does not burn because it doesn't reach its ignition temperature but when it is spread in form of fillings and heated flames makes it to reach on its ignition temperature and hence its burns
