The color of the coating on iron fillings would be brown or reddish-brown.

Explanation:

  • When iron filings are added to the copper sulfate solution, the following reaction occurs:

Fe+CuSO_4\rightarrow Cu +FeSO_4

  • Due to the single displacement reaction, as iron is more reactive than copper, it displaces copper from copper sulfate solution and leads to the formation of ferrous sulfate and copper as the product.
  • The so formed copper gets deposited on the iron fillings due to which a brown or reddish-brown layer is formed over the black iron fillings.
  • Thus after 10 minutes the color of the iron nail would be brown or reddish-brown.
