Iron is rendered passive on passing nitric acid because of formation of thin oxide coating on the surface of the metal which stops further reactions.

Iron (Fe) is rendered passive with fuming nitric acid (HNO3) because of formation of reddish brown layer or coating of iron oxide which prevents its further reaction with the acid, hence nitric acid is helpful.
