Iron can be separated from trash by using electromagnets.

Trash can contain waste materials including iron ore and so moving an electromagnet fitted to a crane can lift up the iron, also called scrap iron that is required and separate it from the trash that is unwanted.

Overbelt magnetic separators are used for this purpose.
