Iron metal is placed in a blue coloured copper nitrate solution. What will you observe after one hour, explain?

After an hour we will notice the solution turns dirty green due to the formation of ferrous sulphate. When Iron is added in Hydrated Copper Sulphate , it will displace copper from its salt solution and forms its respective salt. This reaction is called displacement reaction. Since Iron is placed above copper in activity series , it can easily displace copper and form its salt.

The reaction is as follows:

Fe + CuSO4 ---------------> FeSO4 + Cu

Iron metal + blue coloured copper sulphate --------------> Dirty green precipitate of ferrous sulphate + Copper metal
