Answer:

acidic

Explanation:

because when iron reacts with oxygenand with moisture to form

iron oxide (Fe2O3).Which forms rust as the rust is an acidic substance which corrodes the metal .

Rust:

  • When Iron reacts with oxygen in presence of moisture is form iron oxide (rust).
  • In iron, the rust makes surface flaky which causes damage to the iron under it.
  • After sometimes, rust increases and the metal disintegrates.
  • When rust is formed on the surface of the iron and it is kept is low humidity, the rust layer acts as protection for the metal under it. This is called as "stable" layer protection.
  • Here, reduction of oxygen and oxidation of iron takes place.
  • Oxidation process:

2 F e \rightarrow 4 e^{-}+2 F e^{2+}

  • Reduction process:

4 e^{-}+O_{2}+2 H_{2} O \rightarrow 4 O H^{-}

  • Overall process:

\mathrm{Fe}^{2+}+2 \mathrm{OH}^{-} \rightarrow \mathrm{Fe}(\mathrm{OH})_{2}\rightarrow \mathrm{Fe}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{3} \cdot \mathrm{xH}_{2} \mathrm{O}

Rust is basic in nature.
