Iron on reaction with HCl forms FeCl2 and not a FeCl3 as the hydrogen liberated during the process prevents the oxidation of ferrous chloride to ferric chloride.

* Iron on reacting with HCl liberates hydrogen gas. This further reacts with oxygen present in the air to form water.

This hinders the oxidation of ferrous to ferric chloride.

* Also, ferrous compounds are readily formed during a lower second ionisation energy of iron as compared to the third.
