Iron can rust in presence of Oxygen and water, here Zn helps it to prevent the contact of oxygen and water to Fe.

Thus, oxidation Of Fe will not take place, and hence no rusting will occur.

A coating of zinc on an iron pipe prevents the exposure of the iron pipe to the atmospheric oxygen and atmospheric water vapour.

As a consequence, rusting does not take place and the longevity of iron pipe is enhanced.

Zinc does not react with atmospheric oxygen or water vapour at ordinary temperatures and therefore zinc coating is the most appropriate method to prevent rusting of iron pipes.
