"Chromium doesn’t break down in concentrated nitric acid on account of the arrangement of a detached film of oxide at first glance.
However, it really responds with HNO3. Here is the reaction that will be obtained:
If we react iron with concentrated nitric acid then,
Fe + 6HNO3 →Fe (NO3)3 + 3H2O + 3NO2
If we react iron with dilute nitric acid then,
3Fe + 8HNO3 →3Fe (NO3)2 + 4H2O + 2NO
This is the basic reaction."
