Irony in the Chapter
The irony in the lesson, Mrs. Packletide’s Tiger is this that Mrs. Packletide had hoped shooting of tiger would help her outsmart Loona Bimberton. She felt her jealousy would be satisfied. However, the shooting of tiger proved quite a source of stress, tension, worry, and loss to her. She not only had to pay a very heavy amount to pacify Mrs. Mebbin, but also had to face the fears of her secret revealed to Loona Bimberton.
The irony in this story is the “fake vanity of British Ladies” and the author uses Sarcastic tone. Mrs. Packletide wanted to make Loona Bimberton. For this, she pays a huge price. She wants to hunt a tiger to make Loona Bimberton to feel jealous of her and wanted to present “a brooch made of tiger’s claws”. She pays Rs.1000/- to the villagers to get the tiger which was weak and to Miss Mebbinm, she gets her a new cottage. She succeeds in making Loona Bimberton feel low by presenting her with the brooch but going through all those hardships for this trivial thing is what being ridiculed here. The author also ridicules their hunger for publicity and fake greatness.
