Irony refers to the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of their literal meaning. Working in pairs, bring out the irony in the following: Pescud's claim, “When people in real life marry, they generally hunt up somebody in their own station. A fellow usually picks out a girl who went to the same high-school and belonged to the same singing-society that he did.”

Answer:

The word irony is a figure of speech where a speaker usually speaks a word which is just the opposite of what he is actually trying to mean. Pescud has well explained this by using an example.

Explanation:

"Irony" can be explained very well as follows:

To give a short example, Pescud said that people usually marry their partners from the same native background from where they themselves belong.

To make this point clear, he has given the  example of high school and singing society.

However, if we talk about his own life, he had married Ms Jessie Allyn who was a girl that lived quite far away from where Pescud lived. So, here there is a contrary.

In the beginning of this story John expressed his view against the novel where an American hero falls in love with the princess who is from Europe. He expressed his feeling by saying that, such kind of romance is only exists in book but in real life, men only marriage girls form the same status and family background. Ironically, John’s own love story is very much similar to the story which is described in the novel. The title of this story ‘’best seller’’ brings this irony in an appt manner. He was claiming to dislike the love story of the book but John himself ends up with one of them.
