India is facing many problems in the field of irrigation. This is mainly because of improper rainfall and lack of awareness.
India is a monsoon dependent country. Most of its water source is mainly based on monsoons. Canals and other irrigation systems like lake, dams and river valley projects were built based on the monsoons. However, improper monsoon in the subcontinent is the first and prominent reason for the big failure in holding enough water for irrigation purposes.
Lack of awareness is the second reason to be noted for the failure in irrigation system of the nation. Most of the people are still using the old techniques to irrigate their lands which require more water than the normal requirement.
The problems faced by Indian irrigation are:
- Irrigation is largely dependent upon rains. Monsoons in India cannot be predicted in the right manner and the intensity of rainfall can also not be predicted. The imbalances in rainfall are also prevalent in India which means some regions get water for irrigation while others do not.
- The demand for water has increased for other purposes as well. In other words, population growth, industrialization and urbanization have increased the requirement and demand for water which has reduced the availability of water for agricultural purposes.
