Is 2Bromoethanol optically active? Give explanation also.

No it cannot be optically active

Explanation:

for a compound be optically active it have chiral centeres

a carbon is called as a chiral centre when it has no similar groups attached to it i.e all the four groups attached to it should be different.

in  2- Bromo ethanol each carbon bears 2 hydrogens hence optically inactive

Reason:

as this is according to IUPAC  nomenclature the number 1 is given to the carbon bearing -OH group so 2-bromo indicates that it is on 2nd carbon so each carbon has two Hydrogens which makes the compound optically  inactive
