The square root refers to the principle root when describing a number. That is, the expression: square root of 4 is positive 2. This is due to the historical reasons, as well as mathematical conventions. For example, why is the arcsine of 0.5 30 degrees? It could also be 150 degrees or 390 degrees due to co-terminal angles. However, 30 degrees is the principle angle in the first quadrant and thus is used by convention. If this were an equation, where the variable x denoted the arcsine of 0.5, x would equal all the possible values for the angles (x is an unknown quantity thus all values must be considered). Similarly, if x denoted the value for the square root of 4, both 2 and -2 must be considered as x is a variable..
