In actual practice, separations are based on differences in surface tension, size, particle shape, and density. The situation you ask about is so rare that I would classify your question as hypothetical. Even if such a situation existed, it wouldn’t bother me too much: differences in the surface tension and shape of the two solidssolids is quite enough to make them separable by some of the methods described below.
Mineral processing plants carry out such separations on a ton per hour basis five days a week. One methods involve selective flotation; another, the way large or heavy particles separate from small of light ones ( even though the differences are small ). Minor differences in surface tension and shape influence froth flotation behavior. In another method, the mixture is hoppered slowly onto a rotating disk, and particles of different shape fall off the plate at different spots. Some methods work like when you “pan for gold”, shaking a shallow water slurry in a way the the “high surface tension” or “high surface area” particles drift away from the others. Surfactants are added to optimize this descrimination on the basis of size, surface tension and particle shape. Centrifugal methods, and pouring the mixture down a descending spiral trough, also separate different types of solids, same density and sieve size or not. Sometimes, just blowing a stream of air through the mixture will selectively lift away the light ones and leave the more dense ones behind.
If all else fails, grind the particles to a finer sieve size and try again. Then again, you could temporarily coat the mixture with an oil, and try the separations in that coated state, then wash the oil away after the separation is realized
