Nucleic acid namely DNA and RNA consists of several nucleotides. Each nucleotide contain a nitrogen base, a sugar ring and a phosphate group.

As you can see nitrogen is the important common element in both of them which give them their characteristics. Carbon and hydrogen are present in all organic compounds so that cannot be the important common element.
