I think area is scalar quantity because it has only magnitude

Area is a vector quantity. Area vector is measured to its perpendicular direction.

It is vector quantity because with the helping of vector measurement we can say which direction the area is formed. It helps to get the distance between the particular point of the area and any object in 3d and many other things.
