Batrachospermum is composed of gelatinous gametophyte filaments, up to 40 cm long, with beaded appearance, varying from blue-green, olive, violet, gray to brownish. It contains a uniaxial central axis with large cylindrical cells; four to six pericentral cells produce repeatedly branched fascicles of limited growth. Rhizoid-like cortical filaments typically develop from the lower side of the pericentral cells. Cortical filaments grow downward and ensheath axial cells, often producing secondary fascicle branches. Each fascicle cell contains several, ribbon-like, parietal chloroplasts with no pyrenoid.
