Lack of knowledge and the ignorant behavior of the society
The thinking that mothers are responsible for the sex of a child is prevalent in the backward societies. Even in my house, I doubt if my mother or father would know the actual science behind it. One reason for this belief could possibly be - that it is the mothers who carry around the baby for months and for non-technical people, it does make some sense to believe that the mothers have a more decisive role to play.
Not sure about other societies but in the Indian society, another possible reason could be:
We all know about the society’s obsession about boy child. Now it is highly unlikely that a mother in-law would put the blame for a girl child on her own son. The only other person left to be a target is the daughter in-law, the female parent. All the blame is smashed on the daughter in-law. She and her family has to bear all the taunts and it becomes a matter of shame for their family. It provides the husband’s family an opportunity to show themselves as superior. Once again, a reminder that we live in a patriarchal society.
Though, the situation is changing now for the better. As education becomes accessible to more and more people, this belief would perish and the society will soon realize that it is the male sex chromosomes that decide a baby’s sex.
