▶ANSWER: apoptosis and autolysis both seem like the same process, but proceed through different mechanisms.

Apoptosis is when a living cell receives a signal to initiate its own controlled death while Autolysis is what happens after it is dead (the cell is no longer able to control the release of its own digestive enzymes, so they are passively released which degrades the cell.)
