Well, kinetic energy itself is a form of mechanical energy.

Now, let's make it very clear, that Mechanical energy is all the energy of the body constituted by it's constrained motion which is of the form of kinetic energy, then it could be anything of potential energy, that is the energy due to interactions with other particles, in the vicinity in the space.

Also, the internal energy or the pressure energy of the particle is a part of the mechanical energy of the body.

So, coming to the point.

If kinetic energy itself is a part of mechanical energy, even the change in kinetic energy being of the same physical dimensions, though of different significance from the so called Work Energy Theorem, it'll be something surely contributing to the mechanical energy of the particle
