Is cleistogamy advantageous or disadvantageous for a plant?
Cliestogamy is one of two types of self fertilisation in which the flower does not open and the fertilisation takes place between male and female gmate of the same flower and that too in the same flower . In cliestogamy the flower never opens.
Talking about whether it is advantageous or disadvantageous it depends on the factor which we are looking at.
Some advantages of cliestogamy are-
As flower never opens thus it provide assurance of fertilisation.
As fertilisation occur between the gamestes if the same flower thus it helps in the development of the pure lines. Note:— development of pure line is helpful in the breedung programmes .
There is no need of pollinator for pollination.
disadvantages -
The biggest disadvantage of cliestogamy is that it does not allow any kind of variation . Variation is necessary for survival and any organisms should have the ability to change . Thus , inability to variate proves to be he biggest disadvantage.
