Conventional camera uses film to store the image. A digital camera captures the image with a sensor and stores it on a memory card. This gives digital camera obvious advances in cost and how fast the images can be viewed. Apart from these obvious differences there are other differences.

The sensor on the digital camera can also be used to form the viewfinder display on the back display or separate viewfinder. This makes possible to create mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that work with any lens. On film cameras mirrorless cameras had viewfinders which had framing markings only for selected focal lengths.

Second because the image is processed digitally various corrections can be done to it. For example geometric distortions can be corrected. This is typical with fixed lens cameras. The correction is done live on the viewfinder image so it is invisible to the user unless he shoots raw. This allows more freedom in designing the lenses as one does not have to worry about the geometric distortions. Other types of processing is also done: noise reduction, stacking multiple images etc.
