I agree that diamond is a mineral. Diamonds are made of the element carbon. A perfect diamond contains nothing but carbon. Each carbon atom is tetrahedrally bonded to 4 other carbon atoms, making an very strongly 3-dimensional crystalline sructure. Sapphires are a mineral called corundum. The corundum crystal is composed of aluminum oxide and is formed when exposed to high heat and pressure. Ruby is a red variety of the mineral corundum. Corundum is formed in igneous rocks that are relatively high in aluminum, but very low in silicon and in metamorphic environments with similar chemistry
