Diamond is not obtained from graphite. It was earlier believed and still believed by some people that diamond is obtained from coal. But now geologists are saying something else. Carbon dioxide must have been buried deep ( approx 100 miles) into Earth. The carbon must have been through high temperature (about 2,200 F) and high pressure . Then it must have rushed to near the surface of the Earth to cool.
Nowadays, synthetic diamonds are obtained made by humans.
