Unsymmetrical ligands are bidentate ligands which do not have a rotation or mirror axis of symmetry and bind with two groups to a metal ion. When two of those ligands bind to a metal ion one can get cis/trans isomerism. A nice example is given here: .

Of course it can be made more complicated (tridentate and labda/delta stereo isomerism) but I do not think this is appropriate here.
