For many years upto 1960 , Lead was the metal used for pipelines that carries fresh drinking tapwater to the buildings, homes and commercial industries through Municipal water supply board.
Lead was also used as soldering material used to join copper pipes and fittings.
Fresh water can dissolve the lead from pipes (Plumbo Solvency) and drinking the water contaminated with lead leads to various health problems like:
1. Long exposure to lead is serious threat to humans.
2. Lead may affect the mental development of the growing children.
3. Children may have learning difficulties.
4. Fatigue, vomiting, constipation.
5. Lead may accumulate within the body and it can get stored in kidney, bones, liver and other major organs for many years and cause LEAD POISONING.
Hence due to above reasons lead pipes were banned in drinking water pipeline system.
