note that the potential function is a scalar quantity as oppose to electrical field being a vector quantity now we can define the electrical potential energy of a system of charges or charge distribution therefore system consisting of a negative and positive. Like charges as a negative potential energy

The E.P. is equal to the sum of the point charges. Considering this fact, it simplifies calculations significantly, since addition (scalar) fields is much easier than addition of electric (vector) field .
