Is electrolysis of water a redox reaction? Explain.

It is. It's a chemical reaction, because it breaks apart the compound at an atomic scale. 

It's also a redox reaction, because redox stands for reduction-oxidation equation. 

here's the balanced half-reactions 

Cathode (reduction): 2 H2O(l) + 2e− → H2(g) + 2 OH-(aq) 
Anode (oxidation): 4 OH- (aq) → O2(g) + 2 H2O(l) + 4 e− 

Add them up, and it becomes: 

2 H2O(l) → 2 H2(g) + O2(g)
