hey mate
yes, energy is wasted in upcoming friction in the sense to do work.suppose, your car is running with the speed of 50 km/hr.To maintain the speed of 50km/hr you have to drive your car constantly and the energy wastes in the sense converted into work done by opposing the upcoming friction and move the car constantly. If energy is not required to outcome from the upcoming friction then there is no need of fuel to run for long distance .we just accelerate any car at any speed and then the car maintain it's speed without any fuel as energy. But, nothing is happened like that.
