The introduction of alien species reduces the species diversity of an area by having an unchecked population growth which threatens the native species.

Explanation:

  • Alien species are those species which are naturally not present in a particular area but was introduced to the area through some natural but majorly human beings.
  • Whenever any alien species is introduced in ant new area it threatens the native species by its unchecked growth rate, because their natural predators are absent in the new area. This enables them to increase their number rapidly and to use the resources that was previously being used by the native species.
  • It disrupts the local ecological cycles, and food chains thus causing decline in the population density of more than one native species.
  • The best example of an alien species invasion in India is Water Hyacinth. This plant is not of Indian origin and was brought by the British for its beautiful flowers, which can be grown in their fountains.
  • But soon the species invaded the local areas, and due to it's high reproductive ability ( vegetative reproduction by Offsets) it soon covered the ponds and lakes of India.
  • It is also very harmful to the aquatic ecosystems because it depletes the dissolved oxygen of the water bodies which causes death of fishes and other aquatic animals living in these waters.
