Answer:

Federalism is system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and various constituent units of the country. It provides for a constitutional device for bringing unity in diversity and for the achievement of common national goals.

This devise has helped India in maintaining its unity in the following manner:

Creation of Linguistic states: After independence of 1947, boundaries of several states were altered so as to ensure that people speaking the same language resides in the same state. Though, it was feared that it would split up the nation, however, it bought people closer to each other.

Language Policy: At the time of independence, 40% of Indians spoke Hindi. Thus, instead of selecting Hindi as the official language, our leaders adopted a very cautious attitude while forming the language policy. They recognized 21 other languages as scheduled languages.

Third Level of government: The Constitution gave the necessary powers to the third level of government - the local government. It was able to connect to the people at the ground level, which helped them to solve their issues quickly and easily.

Hence, it can be said that federal division of power has helped in national unity.
