friction is a retarding force it is a force that directly opposes motion it helps the motion by slowing down and opposing the motion of body or it helps body to move friction act indirectly to motion and it opposes the relative motion frictional force direction is not always opposed to object motion the friction force direction acting on rolling objects can be pointed in opposite direction or in the same direction of external force.

action always oppose any relative motion between surface. simple example book resting on a flat table frictional force is zero. there is the new force to move the book from the table.
