We can associate the states (liquid, solid, gas) with the motion of their constituent particles that is for example in a gas particles can move freely much more than particles in liquids which in turn can move more freely as compared to solids that is if I need to convert water to gas I need to give it energy to its particle and excite it so that it can break away from the forces of attraction and move much freely.
