Voltmeter is always connected in parallel connection with the appliance ( which has resistance). Voltmeter should not be connected in series connection as it has a very high resistance and doesn't allow current to pàss through it. If we don't add any resistor (or appliance) in between, it would be a series connection. You should always have to connect voltmeter across any appliance or resistor in parallel connection.
