The Auora Borealis (and the one for the south pole, the Aurora Australis) are high energy particles interacting with the Earth's magnetic field and atoms in the upper atmosphere. The Earth is constantly bombarded by high energy particles, most guided away from a direct impact by the magnetic field of the Earth (which also makes compasses point north/south). Any health risks that you might run would happen if the magnetic fields did not deflect the particles and if the atmosphere did not absorb the ones that got through.
