Pregnancy occurs only when the sperm fuses with ovum forming zygote and further forms embryo and at last a baby.

Fusion of a sperm and an ovum leads to the formation a zygote. This process is called as fertilization and it is the first step of pregnancy.
During pregnancy, there are many vital phases between this initial step and final, parturition of the baby. Not all the time, these phases are successful enough and hence, not every fusion may necessarily end in a succesfull pregnancy i.e., a healthy new born.
But in general, fertilization is of course a basic cause of pregnancy.
