It depends. Parents who love what they do send a strong message to their children about one (or two) ways to make one's way in the world. Since children often have similar traits as their parents, and since they grow up with an "inside" view on the culture of their parents calling(s) it's not surprising that there are families of engineers and families of doctors and families of police. But it's not unusual for children to realize that they have very different temperaments or interests from their parents, and to choose different paths for that reason.
