Yes, according to me it is necessary to use symbols for elements which make it easier to understand during writing chemical reaction and studying of various phenomenon.
e.g
consider the following chemical reaction
Zinc + Sulphuric acid--> Zinc sulphate + Hydrogen gas
this can be written easily using symbols as
Zn+H2SO4 ---> ZnSO4 h H2
e.g
consider the following chemical reaction
