This can be explain by an simple example by Simple Harmonic motion in pendulum.

When the pendulum moving toward left from mean position to extreme position then the direction of acceleration is toward mean position and direction of velocity is toward extreme position ( as shown in figure ).

This means direction of acceleration is opposite to velocity .
